How to Tell if You Have a Silver Quarter

As you may know since 2001 the per ounce price of silver has risen considerably going from a bit over four dollars per ounce to it’s current price of about thirty two dollars per ounce. Because of the increased value of anything with at least some silver in it many people want to know how to check to see if any quarters they have are silver or not.

The good news is that it’s actually quite easy to determine whether you have a silver quarter -or other silver coin- on your hands or not. The easiest rule of thumb to remember is that virtually all the silver quarters or other coins you will come across from the United States Mint were stamped with a date of 1964 or earlier. There are some exceptions to this but in general this rule holds true for the 90% silver coinage.

If the date happens to be worn off of the coin you have you can usually tell by the distinctive sound and feel of a silver quarter in comparison with the modern versions. You will also notice that the older, silver variants don’t have two types of metal showing on the edge since they aren’t a sandwich of copper and zinc.
