A Good Question During the Interview

Question: If you were asked at a job interview, “How would you improve yourself?” what would be the best way to answer it? I was actually asked this question in one interview I went to. And I’m not so sure if my answer was even right. So I said that I would apply for scholarships for women because I really want to finish school.

Answer: The interviewer was asking you a direct question. So your answer should be one that applies to yourself. And one that the interviewer can believe and relate to your personal circumstances. So you have to cite some concrete examples.

I personally love to learn, so really see job opportunities and daily work as a way to learn something new. Always improve yourself, whether it’s working with your managers to see how you can perform your job better. Or tell the interviewer that you will strive to learn more about your clients and their industries. Learn more about resources and data, or learn about new facets of the business itself.

Whatever you say, the point is don’t make something up. Because there could be a tendency that you can over embellish because it’s an interview. But don’t answer with something you have no intention of actually doing. They’ll sniff that out. And if you were really serious about getting those scholarships for latina women, then do it and not just talk about it.

Before you can improve yourself you first need to recognize a certain deficiency in you. So identify your weaknesses, and work towards improving them. This requires a lot of self examination. To improve your weaknesses also requires being open to fresh ideas. Do more listening than talking. Ask people to give a frank assessment of you. Don’t take it as an offense even if the assessment is negative.
