Different Forms of TMJ Treatment

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, or TMJD, may need one of many different forms of TMJ treatment, while the NIDCR (National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research) recommends that NIH (National Institute of Health) TMJD treatments should be reversible and not alter the teeth or jaw in any permanent way. Usually pain killers and anti-inflammatory medications will be prescribed and sometimes gentle jaw exercises, although with more serious problems other interventions and minor surgery may be required. Where bruxism (teeth grinding) is the cause then often a dental guard is fitted, but while this will protect the teeth it will not necessarily stop the grinding, or help the TMJD. The Feldenkrais TMJ treatment program aims at restraining muscles in order to reduce tension in the jaw and also in the face, neck, shoulders and upper back and also aims to reverse any prolonged habits that may be the underlying cause of problems in the TMJ.
